Please join us for weekly outdoor worship services at 1 p.m. Sunday on the church lawn. These last few months we have learned how we can gather safely, even as the pandemic continues to shape so much of our lives. We very much appreciate your patience and your ongoing commitment to Shandon. These FAQs will provide the information you need:

How many people can attend?

Up to 60 participants may pre-register for each service. We will hold a few spots for visitors, so that we can continue our long-standing tradition of hospitality. If numbers indicate a need, we will repeat the service at 2 p.m.

How do I sign up?

Pre-registration is required by noon each Friday. Please check your email for the registration link through through Realm. You do not need a Realm login; simply click the link and follow the prompts.

What will the service include?

The service will be an abridged version of the pre-recorded service. Music, prayers, scripture and the week’s sermon. The music will not be the same as in the pre-recorded service, but it will include a hymn you can sing along with, since we will be physically distanced and in masks. Services will not include the Lord’s Supper, passing the peace, or passing offering plates. Offering plates will be available on your way in and out of the service, however, for those who wish to make a contribution.

What is required in order to attend?

Pre-registration is required. If open spaces remain, we will welcome folks on a first-come, first-serve basis right before worship begins. Those who attend outdoor worship agree to the following: to wear a mask at all times; to follow the direction of ushers and greeters in arriving and departing; to honor social distancing of at least 6 feet anywhere on church property; and to bring your own seating — chairs, blankets, whatever you wish. (A small number of chairs will be available for those for whom carrying their own seats would be a challenge.) These guidelines are in place not because we love rules, but because we love you, and we want to keep you healthy and safe.

What if it rains?

If it rains any point after 12 p.m. on Sunday, the service(s) for that day will be canceled. Setup takes time, and we cannot set up the necessary equipment in the rain.

How can I help?

We’re so glad you asked! We will need help with greeting/ushering, set up, clean up and working with the sound system. Only a small number of volunteers are needed each week, but the need will be ongoing, so let us know if you would like to help. For now, let Jess Joyner in the church office know if you are interested in serving in this way, and she will compile a list of names to share with those coordinating each task.

What about security?

We will maintain the practice that had been in place prior to closing the building: an off-duty police officer will be on church property but will remain in his car. This is not due to any new or growing concern.

Will online worship continue?

Yes! Our online, pre-recorded worship will continue exactly as it has been. We remain just as committed to this ministry as ever.

If you have other questions, please contact the church office, 803-771-4408. See you in worship — either online, or outside!
