Why volunteer for the Weekend Backpack Food Program?
Cheri Stakely has volunteered in this program for several years. She explains why: “I support the weekend food program by donating food items and packing bags on Wednesday nights. As a Richland 1 teacher, I see students who sometimes do not receive meals except at school. I know that when young children’s brains do not receive enough nourishment, it puts them at risk for learning difficulties, behavior problems, depression, poor self-esteem and other medical issues. I also enjoy the camaraderie of packing bags with other church members. My daughter, Bella, enjoys helping pack bags, too, and she is learning an important lesson about caring for others.”
Sign up to help with Weekend Backpack Food Program
Shandon’s Weekend Backpack Food Program celebrates nine years of providing food for students at Rosewood and A.C. Moore elementary schools and Dreher High School. This program continues because of each of our dedicated volunteers through the years – thank you!
If you would like to join our team of volunteers, we have a place for you: packing food bags, 6-6:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Weekend Backpack Food Program Office (across from the church reception desk); delivering food bags from the church to the schools, 8-10 a.m. on Fridays; picking up empty containers from schools on Monday or Tuesday and return them to the church.
You may volunteer once or more often during the school year. For information, contact Rowena Nylund, 803- 252-7752 or Rnylund@sc.rr.com
