Sign up to help with Weekend Backpack Food Program

Shandon’s Weekend Backpack Food Program celebrates 11 years of providing food for local students. This program continues because of each of our dedicated volunteers through the years – thank you!

You can help by dropping off donations at Shandon’s portico in the designated box.

The Weekend Backpack Food Program is part of Shandon’s annual outreach budget. Additional donations of food and/or monetary gifts are needed to fully provide food for 37 students at Dreher, Rosewood and A.C. Moore every weekend throughout the school year and provide a food pantry at Dreher.

Why volunteer for the Weekend Backpack Food Program?

Emily Heatwole, a longtime supporter, says she continues as a volunteer because “I am grateful for the opportunity to support our families and schools. The backpack program provides students and families who are facing food insecurity with additional resources that hopefully make the weekends a bit easier. A December news article noted that approximately 83% of students in Richland One struggle with food insecurity. Hunger impacts every aspect of life for students. It makes the task of concentrating and focusing on school challenging. Many students rely on the school breakfast and lunch program during the school week, and the backpack program helps bridge the gap over the weekend.”
